A rare & shapely English hoop-back Windsor armchair in ash.
It is likely this chair started its life in the workshop of a Gillow's Windsor chair-maker at the end of the 18th century.
The chamfered and figured slab seat is raised on four substantial legs decorated with ring turnings united by a pronounced crinoline stretcher bow
All of the spindles have been secured with nails - a feature uncommon in Windsor chairs - and are supported by an arched back.
A similar example with a Lancaster provenance - from the workshop of Gillow's chair maker James Wilcock - is recorded in the Regional Furniture Society study: "More about Gillows’ Windsor & Common Chairs” by Susan Stuart
